Election Management in Response to COVID-19: 21st National Assembly Elections in the Republic of Korea
In response to COVID-19, the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea implemented measures to hold the National Assembly elections on April 15, 2020. Among other measures, the “courses of action” included: the establishment of “voting and counting procedures to prevent and block the spread of COVID-19 through the creation of a system of disinfection that promoted citizen’s safety and allowed them to vote with confidence,” guaranteeing “the suffrage of persons with confirmed cases of COVID-19, including by allowing confirmed patients to register for home voting and expanded the registration method for home voting,” the implementation of “a way to guarantee the suffrage of those who were confirmed with cases of COVID-19 after the home voting registration period had closed,” and ensuring “the suffrage of those who were in quarantine and whose movement was restricted on election day.”
